A Study on the Environmental Sanitation and Health Status of Urban Slum Area


Abstract
A survey was conducted by the author and students of Choon Hae Junior Nursing College, Busan Special City from 1 May 1977 through 31 July 1977, on the environmental sanitation and the status of health. The survey directed to a total population of 1896 residing in 350 households of the Slum area in Chon-po-3-dong, Busanjin-Ku, Busan led us to the following findings: 1) Basic-characteristics of respondents: Average number of, family per household was 5.4 persons. A study of age distribution of the respondents (20?54 year old married women) shows 20.9% in the age group 50?54, 17.4% in 35?39, 15..7% in 40?44, 15.2%, in 45?49, 13.7% in 30?34, 13:1% in 25?29 and 4.0% in the age group of 20?24. The women¢¥s educational level was lower than Korean¢¥s national average for married females. A large proportion had received a primary school education both of wife and husband (39.7% and 38.9%), middle school-23.2% and 22.6%, able to read Korean-19. 0% and 21. 1%, and high school-11.7% and 11. 1%, respectively. The rate of the respondents having a religion was 43.4 percent, which comprised 34.8 percent for the Buddhists, 2.8 percent for the Catholics. Jobless rated 47.4 percent of the respondents in the slum area. Among those with an occupation, 26. 0 percent comprised daily laborers, 14.6 percent peddler, 5.4 percent factory worker, and 3. 7 percent retail store. On other hand, jobless rated 38.3 percent of the husbands in the slum area. Among those with an occupation, 22.9 percent comprised daily labors, 14.6 percent peddler, 11. 4 percent white collars worker, 7. 1 percent factory worker. 2) Living condition and environmental sanitation a. The rate of propiator is 46.9% while that of rentors, 53. 1%. b. As to the source of potable water, 57.4% relied on the public water work; 20.6%, on the simplified water work; 16.3% on the well and 0.91% on the natural water source. c. A s for the bathing, 85.4% benefits from public and commercial bath, 23.7% takes bath at home and 0.9%, under the sky. d. Sixteen % finds the nouriture completely satisfactory; 53.4%, lesssatisfactory and 30.6%, insupportable. e. Public rest room serves for 58% of residents while 41.7% is furnished with private rest room. f. Discharges are collected for 55. 1%, 27. 1% disposes them at a definite place and 10.9% disposes indiscriminately g. Electric power is furnished to 94.3% of households and 78.9% owns radio 34% regularly purchases newspaper and 30.6% owns TV. 3) Physical disability. Twenty two percent of households is habited by physically disabled family members and its ratio to the total residents is 4. 1%. Immobilized accounts for 57. 1% followed by 11.7% of dumbs and 10. 4% of blinds. 4) Loss of labor force. Of the household head, 12.6% lost the labor force permanently. 5) Status of illness at the moment of survey. The rate of prevalence was 10.9% and 39.3% of patients was being taken care of while 60.7% being ignored-due mainly (73.6%) to the financial inability.
